Lean Canvas
Reference model
Start with the problem and the customer on the left and right; the value proposition sits in the middle; the money runs along the bottom.
About this model
A one-page plan for an idea that does not yet have a business. It swaps the Business Model Canvas’s partners, activities, resources and relationships for the things a new venture must prove first: the problem, the solution, the key metrics and the unfair advantage.

How to read it
- Fill it in quickly, in this order: problem, customer segments, unique value proposition, solution, channels, revenue streams, cost structure, key metrics, unfair advantage. Keep each box to what you actually know.
- The problem and the customer are the riskiest parts: most new ventures fail by building a solution for a problem nobody has. Name the early adopters, not “everyone”.
- Treat every box as a hypothesis. Pick the riskiest assumption and design the cheapest test of it before you build anything.
What this does
Sketches a one-page business model for an idea that doesn't have a business yet — problem, solution, key metrics, unfair advantage — before committing to the full Business Model Canvas.
When to use it
Ideation and very early Startup, testing a new idea before there's a proven customer or revenue line to model.
Not when: Once the business has paying customers and a repeatable model — move to the Business Model Canvas, which captures partners, channels and cost structure this canvas deliberately leaves out.
What happens next
A validated canvas graduates into the full Business Model Canvas once there is a real customer segment and revenue line to build the other blocks around.
