OKRs → Individual KRAs

Reference model

OKRs cascading to individual KRAsA parent objective from the scorecard or OGSM feeds one objective for the quarter. Beneath it sit three key results, each a measure with a start value and a target shown as a progress bar. Under each key result are two individual KRAs, the slice of the key result that one person owns. A note says three to five key results, confidence about three out of five, reviewed every week.Parent objective (scorecard or OGSM)ObjectiveAmbitious, qualitative — no number in itKey result 1A measure, not an activityStartTargetPersonIndividual KRA:the slice oneperson ownsPersonIndividual KRA:the slice oneperson ownsKey result 2A measure, not an activityStartTargetPersonIndividual KRA:the slice oneperson ownsPersonIndividual KRA:the slice oneperson ownsKey result 3A measure, not an activityStartTargetPersonIndividual KRA:the slice oneperson ownsPersonIndividual KRA:the slice oneperson ownsThree to five key results · confidence about 3 out of 5 · reviewed every weekEvery key result needs someone who owns a slice of it, with a measure.

An objective, its few measurable key results, and below each the slice a named person owns.

About this model

An Objective says where to go this quarter, in words that inspire; three to five Key Results say how you will know you got there, each a number with a start and a target. Individual KRAs then cut each key result into the slice one person owns, so the plan reaches every person’s week.

How to read it

  • Start from the parent objective in the scorecard or the OGSM, and write one Objective for the quarter that is ambitious and has no number in it.
  • Give it three to five Key Results: each a measure with a start value, a target and the current value. A key result is an outcome, not an activity, and should feel like a stretch (confidence about 3 out of 5).
  • Cut each key result into individual KRAs: the slice one person owns and how it is measured. Check that every key result has someone owning a slice, and review confidence every week.

What this does

Cascades scorecard and functional-model objectives into quarterly Key Results, then into the slice of each Key Result one person owns.

When to use it

Every quarter, once a Balanced Scorecard or functional decision model exists to decompose from.
